The SFL

The Scottish Football League is an association of football clubs in Scotland, comprising the SFL First Division, SFL Second Division and SFL Third Division. Since July 2007 the SFL League Championship has been known as the Irn-Bru Scottish Football League Championship after a three year sponsorship deal with A.G. Barr was signed.

The First Division

The First Division is the highest SFL division and second highest in the senior football league system in Scotland. Containing ten clubs each year, the top club is promoted to the SPL, the bottom club is automatically relegated and the second bottom club goes to an end of season play-off with the second, third and fourth placed clubs from the Second Division.

The Second Division

The Second Division is the second highest SFL division and third highest in the senior football league system in Scotland. Containing ten clubs each year, the top club is promoted to the First Division, clubs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places enter a play-off with the 9th placed club in the First Division. The bottom club is automatically relegated and the 9th placed club goes into a play-off with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed clubs from the Third Division.

The Third Division

The Third Division is the lowest SFL division and fourth overall in the senior football league system in Scotland. Containing ten clubs each year, the top club is promoted to the Second Division, clubs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places enter an end of season play-off with the 9th placed club in the Second Division. There is no relegation from the Third Division, although if a club finishes bottom for two successive seasons, the Management Committee may determine that the status of the club will be reduced to that of an Associate Member.
