Work at Cathkin Park won't be beaten by vandals

Friday 21st January 2011

River City actor Simon Weir’s one man campaign to breathe new life into the remains of defunct club Third Lanark’s Cathkin Park took a knock earlier this week when vandals undid six months hard labour by daubing graffiti all over Weir’s handiwork.

Simon WeirThe 36 year old has spent his spare time tidying up the boundary wall at ground in the south side of Glasgow and had cleared over 40 years of moss from the majority of the wall that separates the pitch and the remnants of the terracing that were last used in 1967 when the club closed.

Weir, who feels a tie to the ground after recently discovering that his great-grandfather had played for Thirds, started painting the wall and things were taking shape until the vandalism was carried out, however Weir is determined that the vandals will not win.

“All my work has been vandalised,” said Weir before adding, “There was not a part of the old stadium that was spared. The usual gang slogans and idiotic 'tagging' covered the white walls but it takes a lot more than that to put me off restoring this place.”

“I came home bought some more masonry paint and covered up all of the offending 'artwork' in the dark using my car headlights to guide me.”

Weir has now started restoring the West Terracing at the ground by painting the remaining crash barriers back to their original red colour.
