SFL Opening Day League Fixtures reaction Wed, 17 Jun 2009

The SFL Update made contact with a number of managers this morning to discuss the opening day IRN-BRU Scottish Football League fixtures that were released at 10.00am this morning. Here are some of their comments:-

Kenny Black, manager of Airdrie United, who are home to Arbroath on the opening day said,

“Firstly, I think today is a great day for everyone connected with football and there is a great deal of excitement created when the fixtures come out. We have a home game and that gives us the opportunity to start the season in a very positive fashion in front of our own fans, however as the only full time team in the league we will be a huge scalp to claim on opening day.”

Black added, “Arbroath had a great first season in the Second Division last season and are a big and powerful side that will try and make things very difficult for us.”

Arbroath boss John McGlashan said,

“We could not have asked for a better opening fixture. Airdrie United play in a fantastic stadium and I am sure there will be a great surface on the pitch. It will be a good benchmark for us in the league as we should be getting into our stride by then after the opening ALBA and Co-operative Insurance cup ties.”

The Gayfield boss added, “We will go and attack Airdrie as we have nothing to lose and will enjoy the occasion.”

Elgin City travel to Montrose to take on Steven Tweed’s re-cast side and Borough Briggs manager Ross Jack said,

“I am sure this will be a great opening day for us and as it is on the plastic surface we do not need to concern ourselves with the pitch being over fiery as can often happen in early August. We will have some new signings in place before this game and I would imagine Steven Tweed will be out for some revenge as we defeated Montrose 1-0 in one of the early games he was in charge for.”

Jack added, “This will be a tough opening encounter as Montrose are one of the sides I would imagine that fancy their chances of competing at the top end of the table.”

Berwick Rangers have started their pre-season training programme already and Shielfield manager Jimmy Crease is another hoping to have new faces in place for the leagues big kick off. Crease said,

“It is good to start the season at home and hopefully we will have some new faces making their league debuts at that time to excite the fans even further. We have added Elliot Smith already and have some players in training with us just now and are hoping to tie them up over the coming weeks. We were undefeated against Annan last season and it will be good to have kept that record going after the first 90 minutes of league action.”
