SFL Clubs - By Competition

IRN-BRU First Division

The First Division is the highest SFL division and second highest in the senior football league system in Scotland. Containing ten clubs each year, the top club is promoted to the SPL, the bottom club is automatically relegated and the second bottom club goes to an end of season play-off with the second, third and fourth placed clubs from the Second Division.


IRN-BRU Second Division

The Second Division is the second highest SFL division and third highest in the senior football league system in Scotland. Containing ten clubs each year, the top club is promoted to the First Division, clubs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places enter a play-off with the 9th placed club in the First Division.

The bottom club is automatically relegated and the 9th placed club goes into a play-off with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed clubs from the Third Division.


IRN-BRU Third Division

The Third Division is the lowest SFL division and fourth overall in the senior football league system in Scotland. Containing ten clubs each year, the top club is promoted to the Second Division, clubs in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places enter an end of season play-off with the 9th placed club in the Second Division. There is no relegation from the Third Division, although if a club finishes bottom for two successive seasons, the Management Committee may determine that the status of the club will be reduced to that of an Associate Member.


The Co-operative Insurance Cup

The Scottish Football League Cup is a football competition open to all Scottish Football League and Scottish Premier League clubs. The competition, like the Scottish Cup, is currently a straight knockout format. However, unlike the Scottish Cup, there are no replays, so all matches ending in a draw after 90 minutes are decided by extra time and, if necessary, kicks from the penalty mark.


The ALBA Challenge Cup

The Scottish Football League Challenge Cup is a Scottish football competition open to all 30 member clubs of The Scottish Football League. The competition, like the Co-operative Insurance Cup, is currently a straight knockout format. There are no replays, so all matches ending in a draw after 90 minutes are decided by extra time and, if necessary, kicks from the penalty mark.
